About Gifted Support Classes
|
The Gifted Support Program at PHMS operates by pulling students from their regular classes to come for enrichment opportunities with other gifted students. The schedule is arranged so that each student will only miss each of there regular courses once a week. For example a student may miss English on Mondays, Math on Tuesdays, Language arts on Wednesdays, Reading of Thursday, and Language Arts on Fridays. Additionally for 6th and 7th graders the Gifted Support Teacher (Mr. Capretto) will go into their math class once a week to help with an enrichment or advanced lesson. To see your son or daughter's exact gifted schedule, please select his or her team below.
When students come to gifted support classes they will be working on one particular unit for several weeks. For instance we will be starting out the year on a Science unit and we will spend three weeks discussing this one unit. This means that while each student is missing a different subject each day, they will not be engaged in a different subject each day in their gifted classes. The unit will change every few weeks, often arranged around the schedule of the upcoming academic competitions. For a schedule of the units please visit the Gifted Support Schedule page using the link to the left.
The units we cover will include Science, Math, Geography, Reading, Creative Writing, Research, Future Problem Solving, and possibly others. For more details on the particular units, please visit the Gifted Units page.
As part of Gifted Support Services students will have the opportunity to compete in a number of academic competitions throughout the year. While I wish I could take every student to every competition that they wanted to go to, I am not always able to do that. It will be one of my goals to get as many students involved in competitions as possible at to take into consideration their preferences.
